The ancestors of the Duke and the Duchess Of Norfolk have lived in the Arundel Castle For over 850 years now. Built by Roger de Montgomery in the 11th century, the castle is situated in West Sussex, overlooking the River Arun.
Providing a splendid view of lush greenery all around it, the castle is beautifully built in Gothic style. Undoubtedly, it is one of the classic masterpieces of the magnificent architecture of Victorian England.
2.1. More About the Castle
The Arundel Castle is known for its skillfully crafted interiors, fine furniture, a rare collection of paintings and beautiful, well-designed gardens.
Previously, the castle has been a primary location for filming and shooting. Iconic films like The Young Victoria (2009) and Wonder Woman (2017) were also shot here.
Right after the end of the Norman conquest in the 11th century, the castle was passed down to the Duke from his ancestors. However, the title “Duke” was created much later.

Arundel Castle covers 40 acres of land. Previously, the Castle was called a ‘ Motte and Bailey castle’.
The castle was originally fortified with a wooden keep situated on an elevated area of ground. Arundel castle’s elevated ground was called the motte.
The castle also had a low yard called the bailey. The final designs of Charles Alban Buckler were done and undertaken by Rattee and Kett of Cambridge in the late 19th century.
The Castle had put the personal belongings of Mary, Queen of Scots, on display for its visitors. Unfortunately, in 2021, some pieces from these items, including a set of gold rosary beads and some gold and silver objects, were stolen from the castle. Therefore, the visitors can no longer see them.
Nevertheless, there are many other historic and majestic items from the Duke of Norfolk’s collection that are still available to observe in the display section.

The major architecture we see today in and around the Arundel Castle was primarily done by Henry, the 15th Duke of Norfolk. This restoration project that Duke Henry started was completed in the 1900s. Certainly, when Queen Victoria visited the castle in 1847, she too brought with her some renovations that led to the remodelling of the castle.
The apartment built for her is now open to the public. The Fitzalan Chapel building serves as the parish church. The public can access it from outside the castle wall.
