1. The Artis Amsterdam Royal Zoo

Artis Royal Zoo in Amsterdam was founded in 1838, and even today, it holds the same enchanting value. It is the Netherlands’ oldest zoo and the most popular one. The zoo was named after the phrase “Natura Artis Magistra,” which means “nature is the teacher of the arts.”

1.1. Amsterdam Zoo Tickets and Time

Visitors can purchase tickets online and at the zoo counter. It is preferred to buy them online as the prices are comparatively low. The difference in the prices is approximately 10%. It also benefits people as it saves them from standing in long queues.

  • Zoo tickets cost €25 for visitors ten years and above.
  • There is a special discount for kids 3 to 9 years old. They get a 20% discount and their tickets cost €20.
  • A valid ID should be carried by all visitors.
  • There is no discount for elders and people with disability.
  • The Amsterdam City Card can get you inside this zoo for free.

The Artis Royal Zoo same-day tickets cost the same as for normal pre-booking tickets. The Amsterdam Zoo tickets get you access to everything inside but to visit Artis Micropia, you can get your tickets upgraded to €4.50 per person.

March to October is the peak season, during which the zoo opens at 9 am and closes at 6 pm. During the lean season, i.e., November to February, the zoo opens at 9 am but closes an hour early at 5 pm. The last entry can be made half an hour before the closing time.

Micropia in the zoo has different timings. It opens at 11 am and closes at 5 pm every day, regardless of the season.

1.2. Major Attractions at The Artis Amsterdam Royal Zoo

The Amsterdam Zoo Map is a must when you travel here. It helps you locate all the attractions. It helps you locate animal enclosures, restaurants, washrooms, baby facilities, stores for souvenirs, etc. You would not miss anything and also won’t get lost. It is extremely necessary when you visit here with your kids.

iii) Artis Micropia: Visit Micropia, the world’s only microbe museum. You can explore the smallest microorganisms on Earth.

iv) Butterfly Pavilion: It is one of the best places to spend quality time as it is suitable for all age groups. There are more than 1000 butterflies in around 20 to 30 varieties here at the butterfly pavilion.

v) The Insectarium: There are more than 70 live species of insects at this Insectarium in Artis Royal Zoo. It also has an audio-visual show with magnified images and surrounding sounds.

vi) Zoological Museum: This museum has some of the most compelling scientific collections from the 19th century.

vii) Amsterdam Zoo Planetarium: Two of the best experiences at this planetarium are the Space Trip and Earth Habitat. They will provide you with the best and most unique experience. You will have the experience of visiting the planets and the Milky Way galaxy. Also, explore the ocean’s surface and the earth’s ecosystems.

1.3. Reach the Zoo in Amsterdam

The Amsterdam Zoo is located at Plantage Kerklaan 38 40, 1018 CZ, Amsterdam. One can take public or private transportation to reach the Artis Amsterdam Royal Zoo. Public transport is recommended, specifically during peak seasons and holidays.

Tram is the best way to visit Artis Royal Zoo. Trams 7, 14, and 19 are the best ones. Tram 14 starts from Amsterdam Central Station and stops at the Artis Royal Zoo. Tram 7 and 19 stops are about 5-7 minutes away from Artis Zoo.

For those who prefer to travel by metro, Waterlooplein is the nearest metro station.

1.4. What to Eat and Drink Around Artis Zoo in Amsterdam?

De Plantage is one of the best cafés to visit near the zoo. It is located along the stunning walking boulevard, Artisplein. This place is the best place to have breakfast, lunch, snacks, or even dinner. One can enjoy the views of gardens, buildings, and fountains, which have old 19th-century vibes.

Burgermeester is another place that is famous for its juicy burgers, coffee, and snack bites. A delicious cup of Java is extremely famous.

You should travel with kids and enjoy all the animal exhibits, keeper talks, and feeding sessions. All this takes about 4 hours to explore fully. If you are not with kids and want to wrap soon, it would take around 2 hours. Visiting Micropia could add another 90 minutes to your trip.
