Being the home to the main business market of Virginia, Norfolk has one of the strongest militaries and the finest transportation facilities in England. That is why it holds a very important strategic position from both a cultural and political point of view.

Likewise, the Duke of Norfolk, despite not being directly related to the royal family, is a significant element of the Virginian leadership. But where does the Duke of Norfolk live? If you are also curious to know, we are here to solve your query.

1. Where Does the Duke of Norfolk Live?

The contemporary Duke of Norfolk is Edward Fitzalan-Howard. Earl Edward is the 18th Duke of Norfolk. The Duke holds the hereditary position of Earl Marshall.

In the monarchical government system of England, the Earl Marshal performs very important duties. He is responsible for organizing all-important state occasions.

The Duke precedes the Monarch and also takes part in the formalities of the state opening of the Parliament. The Duke of Norfolk is the chief of the College of Arms.

Consequently, he is one of the three suitors for the title of Chief Butler of England.

The duke sits as a member of the House of Lords as one of the two hereditary peers. One important fact to note is that he secured this position without any election. But even after these privileges, he does not live with the royal family in the royal mansion.

Then where does the Duke of Norfolk live? Arundel Castle in Sussex is the answer. Yes, you read that right: the Duke has his own personal residence. In fact, his castle is not only grand and extravagant but also a treat to the eyes of the visitors.

2. The Arundel Castle

The ancestors of the Duke and the Duchess Of Norfolk have lived in the Arundel Castle For over 850 years now. Built by Roger de Montgomery in the 11th century, the castle is situated in West Sussex, overlooking the River Arun.

Providing a splendid view of lush greenery all around it, the castle is beautifully built in Gothic style. Undoubtedly, it is one of the classic masterpieces of the magnificent architecture of Victorian England.

2.1. More About the Castle

The Arundel Castle is known for its skillfully crafted interiors, fine furniture, a rare collection of paintings and beautiful, well-designed gardens.

Previously, the castle has been a primary location for filming and shooting. Iconic films like The Young Victoria (2009) and Wonder Woman (2017) were also shot here.

Right after the end of the Norman conquest in the 11th century, the castle was passed down to the Duke from his ancestors. However, the title “Duke” was created much later.

Now, if you’re wondering how these castles became home to these dukes, the answer is simple: the ancestors of the Dukes were wealthy, and they could afford immense stretches of land.

Due to the availability of large pieces of land, the ancestors of the Duke of Norfolk were successful in planting widespread gardens.

Among these, the English gardens of Arundel Castle are tropical in nature and have also won awards. The wildflower garden is an array of colours. The Rose Garden remains a point of attraction throughout the year.

The Castle also celebrates something called the ‘Tulip Festival‘ in which 120 differently named tulip flowers are displayed. The Collector’s Earl’s Garden was opened in 2008.

2.2. Architecture of The Arundel Castle

Arundel Castle covers 40 acres of land. Previously, the Castle was called a ‘ Motte and Bailey castle’.

The castle was originally fortified with a wooden keep situated on an elevated area of ground. Arundel castle’s elevated ground was called the motte.

The castle also had a low yard called the bailey. The final designs of Charles Alban Buckler were done and undertaken by Rattee and Kett of Cambridge in the late 19th century.

The Castle had put the personal belongings of Mary, Queen of Scots, on display for its visitors. Unfortunately, in 2021, some pieces from these items, including a set of gold rosary beads and some gold and silver objects, were stolen from the castle. Therefore, the visitors can no longer see them.

Nevertheless, there are many other historic and majestic items from the Duke of Norfolk’s collection that are still available to observe in the display section.

The major architecture we see today in and around the Arundel Castle was primarily done by Henry, the 15th Duke of Norfolk. This restoration project that Duke Henry started was completed in the 1900s. Certainly, when Queen Victoria visited the castle in 1847, she too brought with her some renovations that led to the remodelling of the castle.

The apartment built for her is now open to the public. The Fitzalan Chapel building serves as the parish church. The public can access it from outside the castle wall.

The castle rises like an exaggeratingly delightful fortress above the town centre of Sussex.

3. In the End

The Earl Marshal of England is also known as the Duke of Norfolk. The majestic Arundel Castle is the answer to where the Duke of Norfolk lives.

Many important state ceremonies, ranging from coronations to state funerals, are held by him under his orders and supervision.

Henry Fitzalan was a Roman Catholic who was appointed as the Lord steward and councillor by Queen Elizabeth upon her succession.

Since Anglo-Saxon times, the peerage of Earl was given. The general public is allowed to explore Arundel Castle.

The Castle is popular for its beautiful gardens, fortified staterooms, chapel, inner gatehouse barbican, the keep that was built for defense purposes, etc. The rooms of the castle are adorned with fine furniture and art pieces. In summary, the entire view is magnificent.
