According to British history, Bognor Regis was a fishing and smuggling village from medieval times until the 18th century.

After that, East India merchant and property developer Richard Hotham converted it into a seaside resort and renamed it Hothamton. However, the name did not become widely popular.

British entrepreneur Billy Butlin came to the town to set up his business around the 1930s and, for the first time, presented his ‘Recreation Shelter,’ which was situated on the corner of Lennox Street and the Esplanade.

Eventually, the Recreational shelter became popular for entertainment with its one-eyed bandits and dodgem cars. This location is now known as Butlin’s Bognor Regis Resort.
