Bognor Regis, or simply Bognor, is a town and seaside resort in the Arun district, in the county of West Sussex on the south coast of England and just 56 miles away from London, UK.

Bognor Regis is one of the oldest Saxon names in Sussex. The word Bognor came from Bucgan Ora, meaning Bucge’s (a female Saxon name) shore or landing place and Regis means “king’s” and marks the convalescence of King George V, which happened there in 1929.

According to British history, Bognor Regis was a fishing and smuggling village from medieval times until the 18th century.

After that, East India merchant and property developer Richard Hotham converted it into a seaside resort and renamed it Hothamton. However, the name did not become widely popular.

British entrepreneur Billy Butlin came to the town to set up his business around the 1930s and, for the first time, presented his ‘Recreation Shelter,’ which was situated on the corner of Lennox Street and the Esplanade.

Eventually, the Recreational shelter became popular for entertainment with its one-eyed bandits and dodgem cars. This location is now known as Butlin’s Bognor Regis Resort.

A27 is one of the major roads that will take you to Bognor Regis. But if you are coming from the west, follow the M27 road, which turns into the A27 near Portsmouth.
