As the fight against climate change becomes increasingly crucial, we asked six leaders, including CEOs and a communications coordinator, for their best measures to reduce disaster risks in the EU. From promoting international collaboration on climate action to building and upgrading resilient infrastructure, here are their insightful suggestions.

  • Promote International Collaboration on Climate Action
  • Implement Comprehensive Climate-Education Initiatives
  • Encourage Sustainable Agriculture Practices
  • Prioritize Disaster-Preparedness and Response
  • Invest in Climate-Resilient Research and Innovation
  • Build and Upgrade Resilient Infrastructure

Promote International Collaboration on Climate Action

Cindi Keller, Communications Coordinator, The Criminal Defense Firm

Climate change knows no borders, and effective catastrophe-risk reduction necessitates worldwide cooperation. The EU should develop partnerships with neighboring nations, share knowledge, and coordinate efforts to address transboundary climate challenges.

Europe can contribute to a more resilient and sustainable world by supporting a worldwide commitment to climate action, lowering the risk and impact of climate-related disasters on a global scale. By working together, we can tackle climate change’s linked concerns as a whole.

Implement Comprehensive Climate-Education Initiatives

Tim Allen, Director, Oberheiden P.C.

In order to create a civilization that can withstand the effects of climate change, it is essential to teach people about the issue and make them aware of the hazards that exist. Implementing comprehensive climate-education initiatives at all levels, from schools to communities, promotes a sustainable culture.

Better prepared for climate-related disasters, informed citizens can make ecologically responsible decisions, take part in mitigation activities, and push for effective climate legislation.

Encourage Sustainable Agriculture Practices

Roy Lau, Co-Founder, 28 Mortgage

Encouraging sustainable-agriculture practices can play a significant role in reducing disaster risks related to climate change in the EU.

By improving soil health, diversifying crops, and using water resources efficiently, sustainable agriculture can help mitigate the impacts of droughts, floods, and other climate-related disasters. It promotes long-term resilience by preserving ecosystems and reducing reliance on environmentally harmful practices.

For example, implementing precision-agriculture techniques, such as using sensors and drones for targeted irrigation and fertilizer application, can optimize resource usage and minimize crop vulnerability. This measure not only enhances food security but also contributes to reducing disaster risks and building climate resilience.

Prioritize Disaster-Preparedness and Response

Evan Tunis, President, Florida Healthcare Insurance

Climate change has already caused a significant increase in the frequency and severity of natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, and extreme weather events.

To reduce disaster risks related to climate change, it is crucial for EU member states to prioritize improving their disaster-preparedness and response mechanisms. This can include investing in early-warning systems, enhancing evacuation plans, and providing training for emergency responders.

By being better prepared for disasters, the EU can minimize their impact and protect vulnerable communities from the effects of climate change. Having effective response measures in place can help to save lives and reduce economic losses caused by natural disasters.

Invest in Climate-Resilient Research and Innovation

Viktor Meier, CEO, Glice

Investing in research and innovation is pivotal if the EU is to be resilient to the disasters associated with climate change in the future.

The first step to developing climate-resilient infrastructure, early-warning systems, and sustainable solutions is adequate funding to develop cutting-edge technologies and methodologies. This includes advancements in materials science for building resilience, sophisticated climate modeling for accurate risk assessments, and innovative approaches to refurbishing existing structures.

Moreover, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and supporting startups or established companies geared towards sustainability can drive the creation of adaptive solutions, reinforcing the EU’s capacity to address the evolving challenges posed by climate change.

Build and Upgrade Resilient Infrastructure

Amanda Miller, CEO, Angel Numbers Guru

One measure to reduce disaster risks related to climate change in the EU is to invest in resilient infrastructure. This involves designing and building structures that can withstand extreme weather events, like floods, heatwaves, and storms.

Upgrading existing infrastructure, such as strengthening flood defenses and improving water management systems, is also crucial. Such proactive measures can significantly reduce the impact of climate-related disasters on communities and economies.
