No matter where you are in the world, some form of gaming is a go-to preference for people. Whether it’s all-action shooters that allow players to experience battle scenarios in a virtual environment or strategy-based releases that put a gamer’s brain power to the test, gaming has never been as good as it is today. For many people, another genre of gaming that appeals are winter sports products, with a plethora of smash-hit releases being explored today.

Whether you’re interested in snowboarding and skiing or ice hockey and snowmobiling, there is a wide range of titles that are capable of keeping you firmly entertained.

Accessible on an array of popular gaming devices, people with a passion for snow typically sample these types of offerings alongside watching the action at the Winter Olympics, betting on winter sports, and maybe also even embarking on a skiing holiday themselves. They’re generally extremely fun games, they keep boredom at bay, and there are some impressive opportunities in this popular gaming genre.

Games with a strong focus on winter sports are certainly more niche compared to others, particularly in the sports category. That shouldn’t put you off exploring them for yourself, though, with the genre being treated to some top titles that enable audiences to ski off-piste, carry out some hard hits on the ice, and shred some serious snow while nailing some killer tricks. Let’s take a look at some of the best of them below.

NHL 2K7 is a hockey classic

If you’re partial to a bit of ice hockey, then playing NHL 2K7 is an opportunity you’ll struggle to resist. The ultimate licensed hockey title out there, this 2006 gem is hard to fault despite its age. Players can select from an extensive selection of teams; it boasts some of the sport’s best-ever players, there are well-liked commentators like Bob Cole and Harry Neale describing the action, a variety of game modes to immerse yourself in, and excellent camera angles and catchy tunes to add even more to what is a top ice hockey game.

Building slopes in When Ski Lifts Go Wrong is challenging but fun

A sporting release that provides plenty of comical value, When Ski Lifts Go Wrong is a challenging but fun option that tasks players with having to build slopes. While it doesn’t serve up the epic skiing-based action that many gamers in this category require, its more strategic approach represents a viable alternative.

There are no limits in this particular product either, with gamers being able to factor in the laws of physics while creating their dream slopes. As the game implies, though, a disaster is always around the corner, and sometimes your detailed planning doesn’t pay off, no matter how confident you are. It can also lead to numerous things going wrong, such as injuries. Overall, while When Ski Lifts Go Wrong doesn’t boast the immaculate graphics of the modern world, it’s still a great product to session.

Cool Boarders is a PlayStation 1 classic

If you’re a passionate believer in oldies being goodies, then Cool Boarders is a release you simply have to track down. One of the original snowboarding games to come to the fore, this stunt-based classic is impossible to forget. A title that paved the way for so many snowboarding games that followed it, Cool Boarders is an exhilarating experience where nailing tricks and coming out on top in epic races is the aim. A game that is also straightforward to grasp with an extensive selection of boards to choose from and a variety of slopes to master, Cool Boarders is well worth playing.

Winter Sports: The Ultimate Challenge 2008 is right up there Winter Sports- The Ultimate Challenge 2008.jpeg

Accessible on some much-loved gaming platforms, such as the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo Wii, Winter Sports: The Ultimate Challenge 2008 is right up there with some of the top titles in the genre. While it was released in 2008 and lacks the sophistication many modern-day products ooze, it serves up plenty of entertainment given the diverse range of winter sports you can tackle in one release. Some events are certainly better than others, though, but they represent enough of a test for you to get stuck into. Options include bobsled, luge, skeleton, figure skating, curling, alpine skiing, ski jumping, speed skating, and cross-country skiing. A game that is particularly enjoyable on the Wii, it essentially covers all bases in terms of the winter sports featured and offers winter sports gamers a product that definitely won’t let them down, given the strong dose of snowy-based action that is on offer throughout.

Other games for people who adore winter sports include SSX Tricky, NHL Hitz, Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games, Ski Or Die, Ski Park Manager, Ultimate Ski Jumping 2020, Alto’s Adventure, Snow Rider 3D, and Ski Cross.
