The primary goal of the London Film Festival is to provide British people with access to films that might not otherwise be shown in British theatres. Each year, four categories of awards are presented: The most innovative, imaginative, and creative motion picture receives the Best Film Award.
Emerging British talents receive the Best British Newcomer Award. The Sutherland Trophy, named after George Sutherland-Leverson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland, is given to the festival’s most inventive film.
The Grierson Award is given to the festival’s outstanding feature-length documentary. The Grierson Trust and the LFF jointly bestow this honor. The Grierson Trust has a long history of honoring exceptional films that exhibit moral rectitude, inventiveness, technical brilliance, and social or cultural significance. It is given to the best documentary-based screened films throughout the course of the Festival.
However, it also recognizes the most innovative and inventive filmmakers with distinctive filmmaking. Each year, four categories of LFF Awards are given out:
- The most innovative, imaginative, and creative motion picture receives the Best Film Award.
- Emerging British talents receive the Best British Newcomer Award.
- The Sutherland Trophy, which honors George Sutherland-Leverson-Gower, the 5th Duke of Sutherland, is given to the festival’s most inventive film.
- The finest and best documentary screened at the festival is presented with the Grierson Award.
The London Film Festival also honors notable people with the BFI Fellowship title to recognize their accomplishments and body of work. However, this honor is not given each year. More than one person may be presented with the honor of the BFI Fellowship. There were as many as six beneficiaries of the BFI Fellowship when it was originally given out in 1983 for the first time.
