Best Beaches in Europe

Most European countries have outstanding beaches and views that will blow your mind. These places are perfect for all people looking for an ideal beach vacation.

1. Best Beaches in Portugal

Portugal, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on its side, offers several options for the perfect beach trip. Tourists enjoy the warm sun in the lap of nature, and the shining sands of some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe are major attractions for many tourists.

1.1. Costa da Caparica

Costa da Caparica is an ideal summer holiday spot in southern Lisbon. Adorned with golden sand and quiet environs, this beach is known for its vast stretch of coastline.

It is a favourite spot for surfers with its whirlwind waves.

1.2. Prai do Carvalhal, Comporto

Another ethereal beach, positioned the south of Lisbon, this sandy beach has a long stretch of coastline beside the turquoise waters. The beach also has several tourist-friendly additions, like umbrellas and sun loungers, available for rent.

It also has a small library for bibliophiles and a tent for warm massages. What’s better than soaking in the sun while enjoying your favourite books?

1.3. Praia de Odeceixe, The Algarve

It is famous for its splendidly long summers, golden sunlight, and enchanting beaches. A small river adjoins the beach, an ideal spot for kids to run about.

Some cafes and restaurants serving sumptuous dishes add to the overall sparkle of the cosy beach.

1.4. Praia de Barril, Tavira

It is one of the most sought-after places for warm bathing and a popular tourist family spot. It is covered with golden dunes bordering the clear sands and the warm, transparent water.

The beach also has a rich fishing history and thus is one of the most coveted beaches in Europe.

1.5. Zambujeira do Mar

The coast between Lisbon and Lagos is famous for its small town surrounding the coastline. It offers an awe-inspiring view from the cliff top and is a must-visit for beach lovers.

Portugal’s Diverse Coastal Beauty

“Portugal’s beaches are exceptionally appealing for their breathtaking diversity and rich cultural backdrop, making them a standout choice in Europe.

Like the renowned Praia da Marinha, the Algarve’s golden sands and stunning cliff-backed coves epitomise beach beauty, blending natural wonders with warm hospitality and delectable seafood.

Surf enthusiasts and nature lovers are drawn to the wild, Atlantic-battered shores near Lisbon, offering exhilarating water sports and rugged landscapes.

Nazaré is a surfer’s paradise, with the world’s largest waves recorded there. Up north, Porto’s beaches merge relaxation with cultural exploration, where the ocean’s edge meets Portugal’s historic essence and maritime traditions.

This blend of stunning natural scenery, cultural richness, and varied experiences—from serene, family-friendly coves to vibrant surf spots and scenic coastal walks—makes Portugal’s coastline uniquely inviting.

Portugal is not just a place to bask in the sun; it’s a destination where every beach tells a story, making it my top pick for a European beach experience.”

2. Best Beaches in Spain

Breathtaking sunsets, serene, quiet, cosy beaches, and a warm atmosphere are some of the qualities of the beaches of Spain. Mainland Spain has a vast stretch of sandy beaches and offers an ethereal vibe of natural tranquillity.

2.1. Cala Salada, Ibiza

It is considered the favourite beach destination of beach lovers in Spain. Every summer, crowds flock to enjoy the enthralling atmosphere that it generates.

A lush environment, golden sands and a mesmerising ocean of clear water thrill every tourist.

2.2. Playa de Ondarrreta, San Sebastian

It is one of the smallest of the three beaches, comprising San Sebastian’s beach. It has a majestic seaside and one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Michelin-starred restaurants serving world-class cuisines are another reason to visit the peaceful island.

It also has a small island within swimming distance, making it the best tourist destination for a beach holiday.

2.3. Pechon Playa, Cantabria

This beautiful, breathtaking beach offers calm water and some tranquil deserted sands.

Tourists can launch kayaks upstream of the beach, and the campsite restaurant provides mouthwatering dishes to try out.

2.4. Cala Pregonda, Menorca

As one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, this beach has several small islets adjoining it and many colours that mesmerise tourists.

The magnificent views are something to look out for while enjoying the relaxing waves of the ocean.

2.5. Playa de Sa Boadella, Costa Brava

The golden sand beach covers around 250 meters and has a pine fragrance surrounding the sandy grounds. Fishes swim in abundance in the lucent waters, which are ideal spots for snorkelling.

An additional feature is that the sand is quite soft though grainy and hence doesn’t stick to a tourist’s body.

3. Best Beaches in Greece

Greece sports the longest coastline adjoining the Mediterranean Basin and features countless golden sand beaches. Hence, it undoubtedly has some of the best beaches in Europe.

3.1. Ornos Beach, Mykonos

It is the most family-friendly beach on Mykonos. Its golden sand sparkles under the sun. Calm waves and a relaxing shallow slope add to the beach’s overall appeal.

Tourists can take a bus trip from Mykonos in a minute.

3.2. Sarakiniko, Milos

Filled with several areas ideal for swimming, Sarakiniko is a great beach destination. Debates arise regarding its status as a beach, but tourists couldn’t care less.

It is one of the most enchanting places to visit for people who want to swim or relax under the comforting rays of the sun amidst the fine white sand beaches.

3.3. Elafonisi, Crete

On the south coast of Crete, Elafonisi is a wonderful location for a short one-day visit. It is a definite visit if you lack time and want to make the most of it. There are small hotels for accommodation, and most people travel to Chania or Rethymno to spend their day.

A boat trip can also be undertaken to visit the elegant town of Paleochora, which is nearby. Otherwise, sunbathing or enjoying the waves is always an option.

3.4. Mytros Beach, Kefalonia

It is one of the most dramatic beaches in Greece and has an amazing collection of shining, affluent white pebbles across the coastline.

The white sands and calm waves are attractive enough for tourists to regard it as one of the best beaches in Europe.

3.5. Stafylo Beach, Skopelos

It is about 15 minutes from the bus stop and is a beautiful beach. It has an amazing cave alongside the deep blue weather, which is almost crystalline in appearance.

You are surely going to enjoy the natural landscape that this beach has to offer.

4. Best Beaches in France

Known mostly for its glorious revolution and situated beside the Atlantic Ocean, France has several highly renowned and breathtaking beaches.

French beaches are particularly famous for their proximity to nature and the peace they offer.

4.1. Plage de Tamaricciu, Porto-Vecchio, Corsica

This beach has wonderfully white, fine-sand coves stretching from Plage de Palombaggia to Santa Giulia. It is mostly a private beach with pale turquoise shallows.

It emits a surreal pink glow at sunset, offering an ethereal view of the world. Tourists often consider it a favourite picnic spot.

4.2. Calanque D’Antheor, Le Trayas, Saint Raphael

It has a wonderful series of secluded creeks and red rock calanques along its vast stretch of coastline and is one of the most beautiful beaches in France. Craggy, rusted rocks and pebbles cover the most of the beach.

However, there are no lifeguards or food, so only extremely experienced travellers dare to travel to this beach. You might want to carry your food while travelling to this beach.

4.3. Plage Des Dames, Ile De Noirmoutier, La Vendee

This “postcard-perfect” island is located in the Bay of Biscay. Most affluent Fench families spend their holidays on this perfect picnic island. It has clear weather and sandy shores beside the crystal waters.

The nostalgic atmosphere charms visitors throughout the year.

4.4. Plage Yport

Normandy beaches are among the most visited places in France during the summer holidays. This beach is no exception. It has high cliffs, a violet sea and beautiful red-brick houses.

The beach is famous for its fish, and soft sand stretches for long, blissful walks. Few neighbouring restaurants serve delicious food along with fresh Norman Apple Cider.

5. Best Beaches in Italy

Italy lies between the Mediterranean Sea and an alpine peninsula. Although it is mostly famous for Rome and Vatican City, it has numerous small and tourist-favourite beaches scattered around, showcasing nature’s sublime beauty.

5.1. Scala dei Turchi, Sicily

It is a rocky cliff situated near Realmonte. The unique beach is known for its bronze sands and the azure ocean with steep, greyish cliffs behind it. It ranks among Sicily’s best natural wonders and is a stunning destination.

5.2. Le Pelosa, Sardinia

It is famous for its white powdery sand, bright blue sea, and several secluded areas. Its offshore castle is a hit among tourists from all over the world.

5.3. Baia dei Turchi, Puglia

This beach is in a natural reserve in Puglia. It has a dense pine forest and white sand as characteristic features. It is one of the cleanest beaches in the country and hence has a “Blue Flag” status.

Italy’s Exquisite Southern Shores

“Many people immediately think of tropical islands when discussing the best beaches, often overlooking Europe. However, that’s a misconception because this compact continent boasts many stunning beaches.

Europe’s small size belies its incredible diversity, reflected in its beaches. There’s a beach for every preference, whether you’re looking for tropical-like shores, untouched natural beaches, rocky coastlines, sandy expanses, or beaches nestled against cliffs.

My personal favourite would have to be Italy. Whenever the topic of European beaches arises, Italy invariably springs to mind, particularly its southern region, which hosts some of the most exquisite beaches in Europe and potentially in the world.

Italy offers many tourist attractions, from its delectable cuisine and rich historical tapestry to its stunning landscapes, including some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches.

You could visit Viareggio Beach in Northern Tuscany, known for its shimmering blue waters, or Lido di Jesolo near Venice, famed for its popularity. The Amalfi Coast, too, is a gem, with Sorrento boasting top beaches like Marina Piccola and the free public beach of Puolo.”

Poland’s Hidden Baltic Charm

“There is a wide variety of beaches around Europe, and everyone has their favourites. For me, it’s the north coast of Poland by the Baltic Sea. Poland might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of beach destinations but trust me, it’s a hidden gem!

The water might not always be bathtub-warm, and it can get a bit breezy, ‌but that’s part of its charm. The beaches are stunningly natural and clean.

In Poland, you can enjoy long stretches of wide, white, sandy beaches that are not packed with tourists.

It’s peaceful, calm, and the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the sun. Another thing I adore about these beaches is that they’re dog-friendly. So, if you’re a dog lover like me, you can enjoy some beach time with your furry friend.

Unparalleled Beauty and Cultural Richness

Linda Chavez, the CMO at Eazy House Sale, elaborates on distinctive characteristics that make European beaches unique:

“European beaches are considered among the best in the world because of their stunning natural beauty, rich history and culture, and diverse activities.

European beaches offer a unique blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural experiences, making them stand out from other beach destinations.

One of the main factors that sets European beaches apart is their unparalleled natural beauty. With crystal-clear waters, picturesque coastlines, and stunning landscapes, these beaches offer a breathtaking backdrop for any vacation.

Europe has everything, whether you prefer white sandy beaches or rugged cliffs. The variety of scenery means that each beach is unique and offers something special for every type of traveller.

Additionally, European beaches are steeped in history and culture, making them more than just a place to sunbathe and swim.

Many beaches are near ancient cities or historical sites, allowing visitors to combine beach relaxation with cultural exploration.

For example, the beaches in Greece are filled with ruins dating back thousands of years, while the beaches in Italy offer access to iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

This combination of stunning natural beauty and cultural significance makes European beaches a choice for travellers.

Furthermore, the range of activities available on European beaches is unparalleled. From water sports such as surfing, snorkelling, and kayaking to hiking, biking, and sightseeing, there is something for everyone to enjoy.”
