Birmingham is a metropolitan borough in the West Midlands. In addition, it is also the second-largest city in the United Kingdom.

Also known as Brum, the city was one of the first manufacturing towns. Birmingham used to be a market town in Warwickshire in the Medieval Age.

It slowly became one of the most important towns of the Industrial Revolution.

Birmingham became one of the centers of political, trading, and industrial activity. The city had to undergo reconstruction after the Second World War. 

The city of Birmingham now has the second-largest metropolitan economy in England.

 It is also an important commercial center known for its culture. Besides London, Birmingham is the largest location for global education.

The University of Birmingham is undoubtedly the best in Birmingham. It is a public research university.

It also received the royal charter in 1900 and was the first unitary and civic University to do so.

Every year, the University welcomes over 30,000 students across the globe. 

The University states on its website that it hosts more than 8,000 staff and over 300,000 alumni from all over the world.  

It also has a diverse student population, with 82 percent of undergraduate students coming from state schools.

1.1. History Of the University of Birmingham

The University has two colleges under it:

  1. Queen’s College
  2. Mason Science College

It credits its founding to Joseph Chamberlain, the British radical liberal statesman. The late 1800s had compulsory education as a feature among the population. 

However, most of the common masses entered the workforce by age 14. Rt Hon Joseph Chamberlain was the first Chancellor of the University, and Sir Oliver Lodge was the first principal. 

The Queen’s royal charter in 1900 was the most crucial step towards establishing the University.

The University of Birmingham was the first in England to welcome women into medical education. 

It was also the first University to include a medical school. The University still follows Chamberlain’s main ideals.

1.2. Campus

There are two campuses: the old historic campus and a new modernized one inside the campus.

Most of its construction was done in 1909. The architect Sir Aston Webb designed the old building.

A clock tower on campus is also known as “Old Joe.” The campus also features the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, designed by Robert Atkinson.

The modern campus of the University reflects the rise of modern ideals. The structural style is brutalist. 

Inside the building, there are 14 teaching rooms as well as a 200-capacity tiered lecture theatre hall. It also has two computer clusters and a lab.

The University of Birmingham offers over 600 courses for postgraduate study and over 350 for undergraduate ones.

The College of Medical and Dental Sciences offers various courses, such as Biomedical Materials and Biomedical Science.

There are also various postgraduate degrees in research, nursing, etc. From aerospace engineering to art history, the University offers various courses.

1.4. Achievements

The University of Birmingham is famous for being an accomplished research university. University is also where pacemakers and plastic heart valves were developed.

 Also, the first artificial vitamin synthesis took place here. The University boasts about the development of cavity magnetron.

1.5. Student Life at the University

The University of Birmingham also promises a good student life. The campus has beautiful grounds, a warm community, and good facilities. Students choose to study here because of these factors, too.

The campus is lush green with red brick buildings standing. It fulfills your need for an aesthetic experience along with the academic aspect. 

The Edgbaston campus is a peaceful spot to study with its lawns and cafes.

You can also take advantage of the facilities on campus, like a stunning academic library and £55 million Sports and Fitness club, and more.

The Guild of Students offers help and advice to students. Despite this, the University has over 250 different societies and sports groups.

2.1. Symphony Hall

This is one of the best concert halls in England. Therefore, Symphony Hall is the place to be if you enjoy music and other performances.

2.2. National Sea Life Centre

Whether you are on a date or going solo, the National Sea Life Centre is one of the coolest places you can be in Birmingham.

The packages start at 12.50 pounds per adult, and the price can increase to 26 pounds. The place has a variety of aquatic animals you can see.

2.3. Damascena Coffee House

Damascena Coffee House is a spot visited by locals and students in Birmingham. This place has an authentic Middle Eastern environment. Also, it is pretty affordable when it comes to prices.

2.4. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

This is a place with an amazing collection of art and historical objects. The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is elegant. 

Furthermore, it contains interesting collections of various historical objects. This museum is perfect for family and group visits, too. If you are a history nut, you will love this place.

2.5. Shakespeare Express

Steam engines still form one of the historic parts of England. The Shakespeare Express route is from Birmingham to Stratford Upon Avon. 

The historic buildings of Birmingham and the beautiful countryside of Warwickshire are visible too.

While on the train, you can see farms, avenues, and waterways that form Shakespeare’s county.  You can also get delicious meals depending on the time of your journey. Besides that, you can enjoy high tea too.
